Blogging Likes and Dislikes -- Your Ideas!

I read blogs about crafting, diy, recipes, and home improvement. Thank goodness there are so many wonderful blogs out on the www to touch upon about any subject. My blog reading preferences include things I like, bloggers with the same interest as mine and those who inspire me to take "this" and make "that" out of it.

Now one blog that I visit often is Ms. Karen from Sew Many Ways. With a blog title like "Sew" many ways you would think it is all about sewing, right? Nope again! This little {big is so many ways} blog has so much more to offer. Yes, there is lots of quilting and sewing projects/tutorials but she also includes organizing tips, recycling projects and blogging tips -- thus leading to this post. Today she asked her readers to List their Likes and Dislikes about blogs. There are over 50 comments {more by now}-- of good, valuable, informative responses from other bloggers and readers of what you like and don't like on a blog.

Hearing from other bloggers really helps me with my own blog.  I craft because I love it -- I have this blog because I love to share my crafting with you.  When I first started this blog it was to show you crafts I created using my Cricut I still love my cricut -- but I've expanded my views and want to incorporate all areas of crafting I enjoy.

We are all learning from each other and I appreciate the good and bad of blogging -- so I'd like to ask that you leave a comment about your likes and dislikes of my blog and or any other blog (just a general list).

I'll share kind of the same format Ms. Karen did as it is very informative.

Here are thoughts about my OWN blog {Craft Junkie Too}….

  • Am I too wordy in posts? {I'm trying to work on that}.
  • I've started using the "read more" button/bookmark to help my readers scroll through or skip over the text/pictures you don't wish to read.  Do you like that or should do you want to see the entire post throughout the entire blog?
  • I took the labels off the bottom of each post.  Do you prefer labels in each posts so you can easily click on them or you use the side bar?
  • Is my new set up easy to navigate?
Here are my thoughts on blogs I visit….
  • I do not use a Reader -- I depend on my blog list of updates to know when my favorite blogs have a new blog post that I want to read. Do I read every single post? Nope. I'm a busy mom, work full time and have a home to care for. I miss a lot of posts but I don't worry.  I also subscribe via email to my favorites -- it comes right to my email box.
  • No music for me…. Music that starts immediately turns me off from visiting.  1st of all I'm not expecting it so it makes me jump…..   Video's of music or a playlist on the sidebars is fine -- it is MY choice if I want to click on it to listen or watch the video.
  • I like a clean easy to read blog -- I do not care for dark colored backgrounds with light text.  It hurts my eyes and I can't read it -- thus losing my attention.  I also do not care for lots of patterned backgrounds -- the focus of your blog should be on your posts -- not the background.
  • Fonts in your entire post.  Blogger just introduced us to a whole slew of fonts -- but I do not care for that cutsy font throughout your entire post.  Post titles, sidebar titles are ok -- not the entire body.  I  spot read and skip over a lot of text because of this.
  • I like links in your blog post to "take" me to another page, website or help me find the product you're using.
  • Give credit for the project -- Inspiration is everywhere…..give credit to the creator or where you saw it first….sometimes we just don't know but if you do -- please credit the designer.
  • I like to get to know who you are -- I don't want your entire life story or really want to read about your 5th vacation in 6 weeks -- I'm looking for projects and inspiration most -- but I love to hear about your family, fun times and if you struggle with something I can relate to (weight) :)  I love the "about me" link or blogger profile -- this helps me get to know you better.
  • I'm a visual person meaning I love pictures and/or videos showing me how to do it -- I {love} pictures that have good lighting.  Your picture is the first impression of your project and if you do not have good lighting when you take your picture -- it does not give your project justice.  Cropping your pictures are a good idea -- it helps me see your project and not everything on the table too.
  • I do not care for a lot of blinking graphics -- a few is fine but lots of animated graphics (especially side by side) loses my attention.
  • I dislike the word verification for comments.  I have mine turned off -- if you're worried about spam….. moderate your comments -- all or specify a date after post to receive an email to publish the comment or not. I don't leave many comments because of this…..
  • The {no-reply bloggers} -- I like to respond to comments but if you are a "no-reply blogger" then I can't.  Click here to learn how to check if you are no-reply blogger (courtesy of Ms. Karen)
  • Pinterest - {{loooove it}} If you do pinterest -- let me know with a button, link to your boards or mention of it.  If I like your blog -- I want to follow you on pinterest too.
  • I probably could go on for a few more but I'll stop there…...

Okay -- I'd love to hear your likes and dislikes about blogs in general or will take your suggestions about my blog into consideration….I promise.

~Tracy

  2. Sensible guidelines...I too quit a blog if it's dark with light letters, has music starting right away...lose patience trying to find the off music...their music sometimes isn't quite my music...love pictures...links...man, you could be my twin! Keep up the good work...and "Thanks, for all your wonderful craftiness!"

  4. Since I do not have a blog my oppinion is from a follower point of view. I too DO NOT like the music. I don't mind the reader if the blogger has given me enough information to make me want to read more. I'm not into the cutesy backgrounds or blinkies, too distracting. I do like the pictures/tutorials since I'm a visual person. I also like the blogs, like Sew Many Ways, that share all of their talents.

  5. I think you hit just about everything. Only thing I would add is I dislike having to go through a lot of product promotion to see the "meat" of the post. If people sell products they should put it at the end so only those who are really interested will get that far. Selling on a side bar is fine. I know to look for it there and can check it out if I wish.

  6. thanks for asking. I personally like your blog! but for my eyes and ears....
** I like a blog to NOT have small print! ** I get frustrated when I cannot see the picture because it's small ** I don't mind the fonts but make it readable on a white background or at least a very light color ** I like to see directions/what used
** I like to have the option to subscribe to the e-mail (helps me to get your e-mail as there are tons I look at and forget to go back to because I can't remember where it was...) ** make your colors light on your blog so I can see it all
** those looong codes that are black and have two words - please turn off
** Pinterest -I WANT TO LEARN HOW TO USE THIS!!!

    Thank you for asking...

  7. I lOVE your blog...actually I appreciate most peoples blogs and feel it is a part of their creativity. However I too DO NOT like the auto start MUSIC even if I LOVE the music I usually have to listen with earphone in the wee late hours of the night it is SCARES me when I an not expecting it. I would rather not do word verification when I post. I love to be able to subscribe to my favorite bloggers, it make my day to have an email letting me know that a post has been made.
    Thanks for asking,
    Blessings,
    Valerie

  8. I'm with you on just about everything you said!! I also like when people post BIG pictures, and include many different products they used, not just a certain stamp line. Where's the pattern paper from? Did you make it with a Cricut cart or the Silhouette?? I do NOT like music at all, it wakes up dear hubby when I'm reading blogs in bed!! I also don't like when people have so much extra stuff on their side bars it takes the blog forever to load. I absolutely LOVE you new blog design. I love the white space, it makes your posts pop off the page and the cute little personalized look on your side bars---everything is very organized and easy to find, yet cute at the same time!!

  9. I don't have a blog--yet, but I do follow yours and many others. I agree with all of your thoughts on the blogs you visit. I don't care if you or anyone gets too wordy on a post. Sometimes I enjoy taking a break and reading each and every word and other times I just have a few minutes to check in an see what's new. I love links to other places I might enjoy visiting and I like being able to go back to a related post that I might have missed the first time around. Most importantly, as a reader and a follower, I appreciate all the time and effort you put into your blog. Thank you.

  10. I'm a senior who has followed you for a long time and love your site. I agree with what you've written. I really dislike sites that start with music, like you it always makes me jump, so I turn them off. The only critique I have on your site is all the pink writing on the right side. I wear trifocals and find pink/light red hard to see. I'm new at blogging and don't keep it up like I should. I've learned a lot from you and like that you've diversified your projects from the Cricut. Keep up the good work.

  12. I don't have a blog myself ... Too scared I guess ... But I do so enjoy visiting all you crafty bloggers in bloggerland!!! And I must admit that I agree with almost all of your thoughts on blogs except for a few ... I don't like the read more. I'd much rather see it all at once and I like the labels at the end of the posts ... Makes it easier to search. Other than that you hit the nail on the head about most of the things on blogs that drive me insane especially the music. That just drives me up the wall (especially when I'm at work sneaking in a little blog visiting and that loud obnoxious music comes on when your least expecting it). ;).

I follow your blog through e-mail and love coming to visit. You always have the coolest projects. I've been known a few times to "scrap lift" a few ideas :)

  13. Tracy, I am sooo glad you did this, because I am one of those annoying people that HAD music on my blog. LOL I don't mind it but now I am glad I know how most people feel, I've taken it off. I agree with you on most everything you said. I too don't like the word verification. I like to be able to leave comments quickly I view a lot of blogs in a single day. I like labels and I do enjoy learning more about the person that host the blog. Thanks again!

  14. I'm a mature who has followed you for years and really like your website. I acknowledge with what you've published. I really don't like websites that begin with songs, like you it always creates me leap, so I convert them off. The only evaluate I have on your website is all the white composing on the right area. I think you hit just about everything. Only element I would add is I don't like having to go through a lot of items marketing to see the "meat" of the publish. If individuals offer items they should put it at the end so only those who are really fascinated will get that far. Promoting on a area bar is excellent. I know to look for it there and can examine it out if I wish. You should visit 3rd edition of Trendy Lime's cliche-free Valentine’s Day party. Thank for sharing.

  15. ditto on just about everything you mentioned. i don't care for long, wordy blogs and i especially dislike the music and word verification - the old word verification was bad enough, but the new one is horrible. i've started unsubscribing from blogs that continue to use word verification.

  16. I love following your blog. I too don't like websites that start with music. I leave them as promptly as I open them! Nor do I like the word verification. Half the time I can't even read them. On a positive note: I really like how easy it is to read your blog. The seperate catagories you have at the top is nice too! Wouldn't mind some navigation hints on how to use Pinterest! Thanks and keep up the great work!

  19. I've noticed the changes in your blog in the past year. I like that it doesn't have lots of blinkies, and extra stuff like it used to. I do HATE the read more. I don't like it when I have to click back and forth to read. I don't click to read more I just go on to the next blog. If I don't read a blog everyday then I want to just keep scrolling down and not click back and forth to read one post and then click back to the main page to go to the next post. Just my thoughts. :))

  20. I really like your blog. I agree with almost everything that you put. I use a reader and love it. I can get to all of the new post on my phone so easily. That is the main reason that I like my reader. I also want to say that if a blog has the read more option I will usually skip over it. Sometimes I just don't have the time to read everything. I do however love reading your post and watching your videos.
